The service

What «hybrid battery replacement» actually means here

On a Toyota or Lexus hybrid, the high-voltage battery isn’t one thing — it’s a pack made up of individual modules wired together. When one or more modules drift out of balance, the car behaves as if the whole pack has died: the red triangle comes on, the petrol engine never shuts off, fuel consumption climbs, and the car slips out of EV mode permanently.

The dealer response is almost always the same: replace the whole pack, quote before they’ve measured a single module. Our response is different. We measure first. Block by block. Then we tell you what’s actually wrong, and what the honest options are.

If the pack is genuinely dead and needs replacing, we fit a new lithium battery with new cells — genuine Toyota, not used modules, not a reconditioned pack. This is what separates us from the ~€900 «refurbished» market: our battery is new. Every cell in it is new. That’s the whole point.

We’re based on the Costa Blanca and we work in English. All explanations, diagnostics and invoices come in your language — no hoping the receptionist translates correctly.

UK imports and right-hand drive

Right-hand drive Prius, Auris or Yaris Hybrid? We’ve seen them

A lot of the hybrids on the Costa Blanca are UK imports. Right-hand drive, UK plates, brought here by residents who moved south. The Spanish dealer network has less interest in them, parts catalogues are sometimes confusing, and the prices they quote reflect that.

We work with UK-import hybrids regularly. Same battery pack, same diagnostics, same replacement procedure — we don’t care whether the steering wheel is on the left or the right. What we do know is the difference: on these cars, the dealer is often slower and more expensive than it needs to be.

If you’ve been told by a dealer that your UK-registered hybrid needs a full replacement at dealer prices, get a second opinion from someone who actually works on these cars.

Price comparison

What you’d pay for each option

If you’ve been quoted UK prices in your head, these are the Spanish numbers. Same car, same problem, very different totals.

Option Typical price What you get
Official dealer (Spain) ~€2,900 New pack, dealer labour, full dealer margin. Long lead times on older models.
Refurbished pack ~€900 Selected used modules, balanced. Cells are still 10+ years old.
Single module swap ~€250 One used module replacing a failed one. The imbalance usually returns.
Our service from €1,350 New lithium pack, new cells, genuine Toyota. Fitted with block-by-block diagnosis before and after.

The price gap isn’t about cutting corners. It’s about skipping the dealer network margin and importing directly. The battery you get from us has new cells — that’s the whole point of paying more than €900.

The honest question

Is it worth replacing the battery on an old Prius?

This is the question most UK expats with a 2007–2012 Prius are actually asking, and nobody wants to answer it straight.

Usually yes, if…

  • The rest of the car is in good condition — engine, gearbox, body, no rot underneath
  • You plan to keep the car for another 3+ years
  • The alternative is buying a replacement car for €6–10k
  • You’ve been quoted dealer prices and need to know if there’s a cheaper honest route

A new lithium pack typically lasts well beyond the remaining life of the car. The maths usually works out.

Usually no, if…

  • The car is at the end of its life in other ways — rust, transmission, body damage
  • You’re planning to sell it in the next few months
  • Multiple systems are failing, not just the battery
  • The repair cost is a meaningful share of what the car is worth to you

We’ll tell you this directly if it’s your situation. We’d rather turn down the job than sell a battery into a car that doesn’t need one.

Where we can’t promise anything is what a specific car is worth to you. That’s your call — we just make sure you have the real numbers before you decide.

Why hybrid batteries die younger on the Costa Blanca

The same Prius that would do 12–15 years on a UK battery can start showing real degradation at 8–10 years here. It’s the heat. A hybrid battery pack sits under the rear seat, and on a car parked outside in summer it’s working in temperatures that accelerate the chemistry that kills cells.

Add the traffic cycle of a coastal town — short trips, constant stop-start, the battery doing more work per kilometre than on a motorway — and the pack gets more cycles per year than the same car would get in the UK.

This is why hybrid battery replacement is more common on the Costa Blanca than most UK owners expect. It’s not that the cars are worse. It’s that the climate and the driving pattern do more damage per year.

The one thing you can do about it is keep the fan and cooling ducts clean — a €200 service that often adds years to a battery that still has life in it.

How it works

From first message to new battery fitted

Four steps. No dealership process, no weeks of waiting.

1

Message us on WhatsApp

Make, model, year, symptoms, location. If you already have a fault code, send it — if not, we’ll read it.

2

Block-by-block diagnosis

We come out and measure each module: voltage, internal resistance, spread between blocks. You get the numbers in writing.

3

Fixed quote before we start

With the diagnosis done, you get a written quote. Half up front for the part, half on completion. Lead time confirmed at the same time.

4

New battery fitted and tested

New lithium pack, new cells, genuine Toyota. Fitted, tested block-by-block again after installation, invoice in your hand.

Lead time for the battery: local stock next day, from Poland or Germany around three days. We tell you which one applies before you commit. No vague «it’s on its way».

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The ones we get before a hybrid battery quote.

How long does a hybrid battery last?

Under normal use, a Toyota hybrid pack does 150,000 to 250,000 km before showing real degradation. On the Costa Blanca that range is shorter because of the heat — batteries here often start showing issues at 8 to 10 years instead of 12 to 15. It’s not that the cars are worse; the climate does more damage per year. The one thing that helps is keeping the cooling fan and ducts clean, which is what our €200 maintenance service covers.

Can’t you just replace one module?

Technically yes, and we’ll explain the honest truth: it’s a gamble. Putting one fresh module into a pack of 10-year-old modules creates an imbalance. The new module behaves differently, the ECU tries to compensate, and the pack ends up drifting back out of balance. It can work if the rest of the modules are close in condition — we’ve done it and it holds. It fails when the rest of the pack is already marginal. That’s why we diagnose block by block first: if one module is bad and the rest measure fine, single-module can be a reasonable option. If half the pack is tired, replacing one module is throwing €250 at a problem that comes back in six months.

Is the battery new or refurbished?

New. New cells, genuine Toyota. Not used modules, not a refurbished pack, not Chinese cells. This is the whole reason our price is €1,350 rather than the ~€900 you’ll see quoted for «reconditioned» packs. A refurbished pack is selected used modules — the cells in it are still 10+ years old, and the quality depends entirely on the person who sorted the modules. A new pack has every cell new. For a car you’re keeping, that’s the version that lasts.

How long does the whole job take?

Two timelines overlap here. The diagnosis and fitting is same-day or next-day, depending on when we can come out. The battery itself is where the wait comes from: local stock arrives next day, from Poland or Germany around three days. We tell you which applies before you commit — no vague «it’s on its way». Once the battery is in your hands, installation and a full block-by-block verification take one working day.

What warranty do you give?

Warranty terms are being confirmed with our supplier and we’d rather not publish a number we can’t stand behind. What we can tell you right now: we’re an autonomo operating under Spanish law, every job comes with a proper invoice, and the battery is a genuine Toyota new pack — so it carries the manufacturer’s own warranty on the cells. Message us with your model and we’ll give you the exact terms for your case before you commit.

Can I keep driving with the red triangle on?

You can move the car, and on a short trip you’ll probably get where you’re going. What you shouldn’t do is keep driving it for weeks «to see if it clears». The red triangle means one or more modules have drifted out of tolerance — every kilometre you drive with an out-of-balance pack pushes the remaining good modules harder to compensate. That often turns a one-module problem into a three-module problem. Get it diagnosed soon rather than later; the diagnostic itself doesn’t commit you to anything.
